4 Basic Requirements for Nanny Visa Canada from India

While there is no dedicated nanny visa in Canada, the Canadian Government has introduced two programs designed to help nannies and caregivers from countries such as India come to Canada and work in these professions. These are the Home Support Worker Program and the Home Child Care Provider Program. These programs were introduced in 2019 and fall under the Caregiver Visa Canada. Let’s first understand the basic eligibility requirements for the Nanny Visa Canada from India in detail.

You will need to meet requirements related to education, language proficiency, work experience, and a job offer before applying for either the Home Support Worker and Child Care Provider programs. These nanny program requirements are explained in greater detail below.

The Home Support Worker and Child Care Provider programs accept candidates from different educational backgrounds. However, these program gives preferences to people with:

  • General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) Diploma
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

Suppose you don’t have either of the above education credentials. In that case, you can still apply to the Home Support Worker and Child Care Provider programs as long as you have completed one year of post-secondary education after the 12th standard.

However, you must ensure this post-secondary education meets Canadian education standards by getting your credential evaluated by World Education Services (WES).

You must score a CLB 5 or higher (recommended for a strong case) on an English language proficiency exam such as IELTS to apply to either the Home Support Worker or Child Care Provider program.

You must possess a minimum of 2 years of work experience relevant to the program you intend to apply to.

  • Family caregivers
  • Live-in caregivers

  • Respite workers

The job duties under TEER 44101 include:

  • Providing care and companionship to families or individuals who are incapacitated, are recovering from illness, or have experienced family disruption.
  • Providing personal care and bedside assistance such as aid, personal hygiene, bathing, and dressing.
  • Preparing meals in line with special diets and feeding clients.
  • Performing health-related duties, including administering medications, changing dressings, and collecting specimens under the supervision of a nurse or home care agency
  • Performing housekeeping duties such as making beds, washing dishes, and doing laundry

If you plan to apply to the Home Child Care Provider Program Canada, your work experience must be in an occupation that falls under the TEER 44100 job code. This includes roles such as:

  • Nannies
  • Babysitters
  • Childcare live-in caregivers
  • Parent’s helpers

The job duties under TEER 44100 include:

  • Supervising and looking after children in the employer’s residence or your own residence
  • Bathing, dressing, and feeding infants and children
  • Preparing formulas and changing diapers for infants
  • Planning, preparing and serving meals to children
  • Overseeing children’s activities, including rest periods and meals under the employer’s instructions
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe environment in the employer’s home
  • Instructing children on matters related to personal hygiene
  • Tending to the social development and emotional well-being of children
  • Disciplining children by following the methods chosen by the parents
  • Providing age-appropriate educational training via organized activities. This includes games, outings, crafts, and readings.
  • Taking children to and from school and helping them reach appointments
  • Keeping records of child activities and health information daily

You will also need a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. This job will need to fall under the TEER 44101 job code if you are applying for the Home Support Worker program and TEER 44100 if you are applying for the Child Care Provider program.

This job offer must also be:

  • Full-time, which amounts to 30 hours or more per week
  • Located outside Quebec
  • Non-seasonal

The application process for both the Home Support Worker Pilot and the Home Child Care Provider Pilots is identical. The steps are summarized below:

  1. Obtain a valid Offer of Employment from a Canadian employer
  2. Submit a completed work permit application under the Home Support Worker Pilot Program or Home Child Care Provider Program
  3. Come to Canada with your work permit and work for your Canadian employer.
  4. Once you have one year of work experience (as of April 30, 2023) in a nanny or caregiver role, you can apply for permanent residence.
