Canada Announces Work Permit Extensions for Manitoba PNP candidates

Work Permit Extensions: The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Marc Miller, has announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has approved Manitoba’s request to extend temporary resident status for potential nominees under the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). This extension will benefit those whose work permits expire in 2024.

This temporary measure will enable 6,700 temporary workers in Manitoba to continue working while their Provincial Nominee Program applications are being processed. It is anticipated that within two years, these eligible foreign nationals will receive an official nomination from Manitoba and eventually attain permanent resident status.

How will the work permit extensions benefit temporary residents in Manitoba?

The Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is committed to stabilizing permanent immigration while reducing the percentage of temporary residents in Canada. While this measure is specific to Manitoba, the IRCC is open to exploring options similar to those of other provinces and territories to transition more temporary residents to permanent residence and meet their labour market needs.

What is the impact of these measures on Manitoba’s regional community?

The Honourable Marc Miller emphasized the importance of this measure in supporting Manitoba’s skilled workers and meeting regional economic immigration goals. He also expressed openness to collaborating with other provinces to transition more temporary residents to permanent residents.

Historical Data on Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program Applications

Immigration is a significant contributor to Canada’s labour force and population growth. In 2022, about 20% of all permanent resident admissions came through the Provincial Nominee Program. In 2023, the program accounted for nearly 40% of planned economic admissions, making it the most extensive economic immigration program under the Immigration Levels Plan. In the same year, nearly 157,000 people transitioned from worker status to permanent residence nationally, with more than 10,000 people in Manitoba making the transition.
