This exciting project brings together Swansea University’s Nanomaterials Lab, with its expertise in physics, chemistry and engineering on the nanometre scale, and the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre at DIAMOND Light Source near Oxford.
A transmission electron microscope (TEM), allowing atomic-resolution imaging of individual nanoparticle catalysts during chemical reactions inside a cell within the microscope, has been acquired for this project.
The aim is to find out how atomic structure links to chemical selectivity of the catalyst to create new, environmentally-friendly nanostructured catalysts for a green economy.
To make this possible, the Swansea group are using their world-leading cluster beam methods to generate size-selected and composition-controlled nanoparticles and JM provide input from their extensive experience in catalytic chemistry, advanced imaging and industrial exploitation. Perfect for a top student, this challenging venture offers superb prospects for research impact and career advancement.
