STFC and Swansea University PHD Scholarship: Studying Confinement Via Center Vortices
It is of great interest to study the nature of particle physics’ strong interaction force. In normal circumstances, it confines quarks together into hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, with a force of 15 tonnes (the weight of three elephants), but at high temperatures, such as after the Big Bang, it is weak and hadrons fall apart easily.
It is the subject of intense research, and a $1M Millennium Prize, how this “constricting” mechanism works.
The PhD research looks into the enigma of “confinement”. To gain insight into this, one potential avenue is numerical study of centre vortices – topological features inherently linked to confinement. Alternatively, one can consider temperature dependence via simulations of the hadron spectrum, utilising techniques not previously employed at non-zero temperature and optimised for recognising deconfinement and similar implications such as resonance broadening.
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree at 2.1 level or a master’s degree with a minimum overall grade of Merit (or an equivalent non-UK degree) is normally required.
IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.0 in each component) or Swansea recognised equivalent.

This scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI rate (currently £17,668 for 2022/23).
