Scholarships for international students at Michigan State University

You can apply for the following scholarships if you are a first-year student who does not reside in the U.S. Unless otherwise noted, the application for admission is all you need to submit in order to be considered. There will be a limited number of awards available to students who meet the eligibility criteria. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee a scholarship offer.

The specific scholarship award amounts are listed in U.S. dollars. For further information, please refer to the international scholarship regulations.

Scholarships for admissions

It is awarded to a select group of international undergraduate students who demonstrate a commitment to bridging intercultural divides by spreading the #YouAreWelcomeHere message. Applicants are required to complete an application for the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship. Log in to your account to access the application. The International Tuition Grant cannot be stacked on top of this scholarship.

Grants for international students

Incoming first-year students who are academically competitive and with non-U.S. residency status, applying from schools outside the United States may qualify for the International Tuition Grant. The grant is given out on a competitive basis; with scholarships in 8 semesters worth $25,000, $21,000 or $18,000 being typically awarded to applicants in the top 5% of MSU’s applicant pool. The award is determined via a holistic assessment taking into account academic performance, student involvement, application essays, English proficiency and geographic diversity.

Students applying by December 1 will be given priority consideration. Students applying after December 1 may also qualify as funds are available. U.S. citizens, permanent residents and transfer students are not eligible for this scholarship, and it does not stack with other scholarships from the Office of Admissions.

Grant for Global Ambassadors

This $7,000 scholarship is awarded to academically talented international first-year applicants who meet the admissions requirements but do not qualify for the International Tuition Grant. A Global Ambassador Grant is a holistic grant, which is determined by academic performance, student involvement, the application essay, English proficiency, and geographical diversity.

Scholarship for Red Cedars

Reward for dependents or grandchildren of Michigan State University alumni; $1,250 annually, renewable for eight semesters.

Scholarship for Study Abroad from the President

It is worth $3,000 or $5,000 depending on the length of the MSU-sponsored or co-sponsored study abroad program outside the United States. This award is valid for the first eight semesters of undergraduate enrollment at MSU or until the completion of an undergraduate degree, whichever occurs first.

Scholarships for high-achieving students at the Honors College

To be deemed eligible for these scholarships, students must be admitted to the Honors College as an incoming first-year student and no separate application is necessary. All MSU applicants will be taken into consideration for the Honors College; in some instances, there is a limited number of awards available. To gain more insight into their selection process, check out the Honors College website – no other applications need to be submitted.

Scholarship for Excellence in Honors College

Excellence Scholarships are awarded to non-Michigan residents and international students who are Honors College invitees. The Excellence Scholarship awards $13,000 over eight semesters each year.

Assistantship in the faculty

This exclusive Honors College Professorial Assistantship is offered to a select number of international and domestic students who have demonstrated excellence in academic work – they must achieve a GPA that puts them in the upper 5% of applicants from their high school or homeschool. Those selected will enjoy an annual stipend of approximately $3,500 for research or scholarly activity, with the program being renewable for up to four semesters. Scholarship for Distinction in Honors College

For non-resident Honors College invitees who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, Canadians, or Mexicans; $5,000 annually; eight semesters.
