Yukon Introduces New Expression of Interest (EOI) System

The Government of Yukon will open its new Expression of Interest (EOI) intake for the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) on March 31, 2025, replacing the previously used first-come, first-served approach. Starting March 31, employers must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to hire a foreign worker through the program.

The Yukon government consulted with local businesses and industry groups to create this new system. Instead of processing applications in the order they are received, the territory will invite employers to apply based on whether their worker fits Yukon’s most important needs.

This approach is similar to systems used in other provinces, like Alberta’s AAIP program. It helps ensure the limited number of nominations available in 2025 go to workers who can best support Yukon’s economy.

Updates on the New EOI System for Yukon Nominee Program

Intake Period: March 31 – April 22, 2025

Priority Groups

  • Foreign workers with 1+ year of Yukon work experience
  • Yukon University graduates
  • Francophone/French-speaking candidates
  • Temporary Measure Letter or Support recipients

Nomination Cap: 215 (50% reduction from 2024 due to federal allocation cuts)

What Employers Need to Know

  • Any employer wanting to nominate a worker in 2025 must submit an EOI (unless they already applied in 2024).
  • The EOI form will ask for basic information about the worker being nominated.
  • Not all employers who submit an EOI will be invited to apply – Yukon can only nominate 215 workers in 2025.
  • Employers with pending 2024 applications don’t need to submit an EOI but will be assessed under the new priorities.

Yukon’s Key Immigration Streams

While the EOI system applies broadly, employers should note these specific YNP pathways:

Background on Reduced Nominations

The federal government cut Yukon’s nomination allocation by 50% for 2025, allowing only 215 nominations compared to previous years. This reflects Canada’s broader effort to stabilize immigration levels nationwide.

After the EOI period closes on April 22, Yukon will publish the total number of submissions received. Employers selected to apply will then have the opportunity to submit full applications.

Impact on Canadian Immigrants

IRCC strike is expected to have an impact on many Canadians who rely on government services, such as the processing of applications for citizenship, passports, and other Canadian immigration-related services.

While the government has promised to prioritize benefit payments, including the Canada Child Benefit, Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, Veterans’ income support, Old Age Security, and Guaranteed Income Supplement payments, disruptions, and delays are still expected.

It is recommended that Canadians seeking government services during the strike should check the relevant government websites for up-to-date information on service disruptions and alternative options.
